So you want to improve you SEO (Search Engine Optimization)? Lets start with some basics:
- Genuine Content
If we marked the top 100 things to do in order to improve your website’s SEO, 90 out of the 100 would probably be – post genuine content! Content is the most important factor in your SEO, as search engines read that content, and index / rank your site accordingly. By “genuine” content we mean content that is unique to your site, and that you wrote it by yourself: if you copy content, its ranking will be very low as search engines compare content between sites, and try to comprehend which site is the origin of the copied content.
- Regular updates
It is critically important that the posted content would be updated / new content on regular basis. Each time the site is indexed, you would want the search engine to find new things. Think of a restaurant with clients – the most popular restaurants are the ones which have foot traffic coming in all the time!
- External links
If others link to your site – your ranking is higher. This is a basic Google ranking principal that was patented by Google when they launched their site. Make sure others link to you, and in relevance to your keywords, i.e. – if your website is about hashtags, you want others link to you from pages which speak about hashtags, preferred on pages which deal with other things.
- Internal links
Create links in between your pages (i.e. “you can read more about SEO in my previous article), but don’t do too much of those as it would look to the search engine like you are trying to spam.
- Valid HTML/JS code
- Device Compatibility
Most search engines will rank you high only if your site is fully accessible by all types of devices. Make sure that your design template is “responsive”, and accessible from all types of browsers and devices.
- Proper headline and site description
The headline and the site description (see below) are the way search engine represent your site to the public. If those are not valid or not written properly, your site’s ranking won’t be high.
<title>My site title</title>
<meta name=”description” content=”My site is all about interesting things”>
<meta name=”keywords” content=”SEO, hashtags”>
<meta name=”author” content=”Barack Obama”>
- Full online presence (Facebook, linkedIn, Blog,…)
Your basic agenda to create external links is by starting a Facebook page, LinkedIn page or an external blog. Don’t miss that opportunity!
- Be persistent
You need to post new content, and promote your site for long time, 2-3 years, before you get results. Search engines look at your site’s timeline and how ling you are in the market, before you get the appropriate credit points. So be patient!
- Advertise for money
Take some pocket money, and invest in Facebook / Google advertisements. This is whitelisting your site and telling the search engines “hey, this is one of us, not a spammer. Please help!”
