Advanced SEO guidelines

So you finished reading the two previous SEO guidelines – “top 10 SEO tips” and “10 SEO DON’T DO” – and you want some advanced tips? OK, here is what we know about it:

  1. Smart content

Once you have content on your site, you need to think how you make that content smart enough to support your SEO ranking. As a start, you should never abuse the reader due to your SEO ambition, however, there are lots of ways to improve your SEO by writing smart content. The first priority, is that the content will be interesting and adding value to the readers, thus – they will engage, feedback and share your items. It is also highly recommended to use a thesaurus when you write things, so you could repeat keywords but in different ways: when users search, they don’t always search for the words that you planned around, but search for similar words / search phrases. For example, if our site is trying improve SEO around search terms like “hashtags trends”, then the best SEO content will be if we wrote an item about hashtags trends, and then the next item about Hashtags Statistics, and then on Hashtags KPIs, Hashtags Performance, Top Hashtags, Trending Hashtags, Popular Hashtags, Well-liked hashtags, most useful hashtags etc – rather than to compile 6 articles which all deal with “Hashtags Trends”.

  1. Valuable external links

External links are good, but external links have value which is changing by who is linking to you. In some cases, if the referring site has got bad reputation (like – spammers sites, hackers, xxx-rated, Multi Level Marketing websites) – then it is actually better not to have that link because Google may lower your rank in accordance. However, if you manage to get government websites to link to you (.GOV or .GOV.{your-TLD} e.g. like .govt.uk) – your ranking will jumpt to the sky. Non profitable organizations, high traffic websites, newspapers and popular blogs – are the type of websites you want to be linked from.

  1. Embed keywords in HTML tags
A very strong and valid way to improve your SEO is by adding your keywords inside your HTML code, not as spam, but as part of the naming convention. This is a very creative way that our TagPredict team found out to be working very well. If your site (for example) wants to promote internet marketing, obviously if your CSS classes will be called “.internet-marketing-blog” and “.internet-marketing.table” etc – the search engine will understand that you are serious into internet marketing! Remember: SEO is like speaking to search engines, not to people.
  2. Embed keywords in page names and images’ names
This is almost basic, yet crucial: instead of calling your pages with meaning-less names (like: “about_us.html”, “contact_us.html”, “homepage.html”), make sure you embed your keywords in! Look at our website, for example… if it had multiple pages, we would use: “about_hashtag_stats.html”, “contact_the_hashtags_team.html”, “hashtags_prediction_app_homepage.html” etc
  1. Register your site
Register your site as an approved developers site with Google’s webmaster’s administration. Once they authenticate your domain name, and email address, you are more likely to be cleared for better SEO results.
  2. Line up Cnames
Cnames are free to use if you own your own domain names. So if you have a blog, prefer to have a dedicated cname for it, if possible even dedicated IP for it. We use, for example, http://blog.tagpredict.com for this blog, instead of using http://www.tagpredict.com/blog
  3. MetaTags for Google, Facebook and leading sites

Always add Facebook Open Graph meta tags, google meta tags and any pther meta tags that are required specifically by search engines or web portals that you fancy to be included in.

  1. Target the Google Rich Answer box

About 30% of the Google search results have got a Google Rich Answer box. Define which questions are interesting for your site, and dedicate pages and SEO effort for them.

  1. Users’ comments.
Users’ comment are crucial for user engagement and for sharing your items in social media. Once the search engine can see that genuine users are interested in your content, your ranking goes up.
  2. Help competitors
Don’t forget to link your website to competitors. You achieve three things in that: (1) Google can see that your content is genuine; (2) Users can see that you are honest and genuine; (3) your competitors may see your link in their statistical reports, and link back to you.

    Good luck !
